Water and methanol extracts of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni (S. rebaudiana )leaves were tested on the egg production and physical growth of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). It could be demonstrated that the different concentrations of the water extracts significantly reduced the egg production of C. elegans as compared to the controls (p<0.05). When the 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5 gr/100 ml methanol extracts of S. rebaudiana leaves were examined, a significant decrease in egg yield was observed at concentration of 0.25 gr/100 ml (p<0,05). Significant differences were found between all the concentrations tested and the control groups. The different concentrations of water and methanol extracts of S. rebaudiana did not show any effect on the physical growth of C. elegans. It is doubtful whether the water extract of S. rebaudiana, which are being used in folks medicine have a positive effect on C. elegans. Future in vitro and in vivo studies are necessary to be able to use S. rebaudiana as a therapeutic remedy.
